Well, at least we are getting a new GRRM book this holiday season

Published in celebration of the twentieth anniversary of George R. R. Martin’s landmark series, this lavishly illustrated special edition of A Game of Thrones—with gorgeous full-page illustrations in every chapter—revitalizes the fantasy masterpiece that became a cultural phenomenon. The mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure of this magnificent saga come to life as never before.

In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the North of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a region of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

We aren’t so sure The Winds of Winter will come out January 2017

I know that there have been several reports, but they just don’t smell right to me. I know that it can be hard to have the contrarian view when the entire internet is waiting for this book to come out, and or speculating that The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring will be released at the same time, but that doesn’t make it any more likely.

Just like when you buy a stock in the stock market. You might want the stock to go up, but whether or not it does is 50/50.

George has released another Arianne excerpt

There has been some chatter that this was released in response to the recent episodes’ story progression. Hmmm…

GRRM says The Winds of Winter isn’t even close to done

Here is his blog post.

And here are some choice excerpts:

THE WINDS OF WINTER is not finished.

Believe me, it gave me no pleasure to type those words. You’re disappointed, and you’re not alone. My editors and publishers are disappointed, HBO is disappointed, my agents and foreign publishers and translators are disappointed… but no one could possibly be more disappointed than me. For months now I have wanted nothing so much as to be able to say, “I have completed and delivered THE WINDS OF WINTER” on or before the last day of 2015.

But the book’s not done.

Nor is it likely to be finished tomorrow, or next week. Yes, there’s a lot written. Hundreds of pages. Dozens of chapters. (Those ‘no pages done’ reports were insane, the usual garbage internet journalism that I have learned to despise). But there’s also a lot still left to write. I am months away still… and that’s if the writing goes well. (Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn’t.) Chapters still to write, of course… but also rewriting. I always do a lot of rewriting, sometimes just polishing, sometimes pretty major restructures.

And then later…

Unfortunately, the writing did not go as fast or as well as I would have liked. You can blame my travels or my blog posts or the distractions of other projects and the Cocteau and whatever, but maybe all that had an impact… you can blame my age, and maybe that had an impact too…but if truth be told, sometimes the writing goes well and sometimes it doesn’t, and that was true for me even when I was in my 20s. And as spring turned to summer, I was having more bad days than good ones. Around about August, I had to face facts: I was not going to be done by Halloween. I cannot tell you how deeply that realization depressed me.

It’s clear that 2015 didn’t go as GRRM had planned, and the summary is this. He’s always been a slow writer, more specifically one that writes in streaks. When he gets cold, he doesn’t make much progress. He has said in an interview, he wishes he continued with The Winds of Winter when he was finishing ADWD because he hasn’t been able to get on a hot streak like that one since. And the situation is complicated by all of the distractions in his life. Those distractions are a choice of his own. So there we have it. GRRM said his publishers could probably have the book out within 3 months of him finishing, but unless he has it finished by September, that means we won’t have The Winds of Winter in 2016.

TWOW Prologue leaks onto the web

This morning we’ve come across a leaked prologue from The Winds of Winter. We don’t have any way to verify if it is legitimate, but the POV character does align with what was previously expected. Since it isn’t verified, and it also isn’t coming from GRRM or the publisher, we are not going to link to it. But based on our post from yesterday, maybe it is actually time to check Amazon regularly.

UPDATE: Ok, so we no longer think this is legit. When the Blackfish speaks, we listen.

RUMOR: GRRM has turned in the first draft of TWOW

Well this is interesting. According to a user on Reddit, GRRM may have completed and submitted his first draft of The Winds of Winter.

I have a couple of friends in publishing…
They claim that as of late the little birds have been whispering that GRRM has turned in the first draft of TWOW.

Further in the comments it’s noted that George’s editor Anne Groell has been quiet on twitter lately. Are these two events just a coincidence, or is this the smoke that proves there is a fire.

In terms of a timeline, there is still a need for revisions and editing to take place, so even if the rumor is true, the book will not be out this year or in time for the holiday season. But you never, know maybe it will show up on Amazon any day now.
