Release date
Summary:
The sixth book is going to be called The Winds of Winter, taking the title of the originally last book of the trilogy and the later planned fifth of six books. By June 2010, Martin had finished four chapters for The Winds of Winter, from the viewpoints of Sansa Stark, Arya Stark, and Arianne Martell. In July 2010, he added that an Aeron Greyjoy chapter had been moved from A Dance with Dragons to The Winds of Winter, accumulating to around 100 completed pages. We don’t believe that GRRM has done much “original” writing for The Winds of Winter yet, but that most of the existing chapters are from A Dance With Dragons, and have been moved to The Winds of Winter via the editing process.
After the publication of A Dance with Dragons, Martin announced his return to writing in January 2012, spending the meantime on book tours, conventions, and continuing his work on the long-overdue The World of Ice and Fire companion guide that he wanted to have finished by the end of 2011. He also worked on a new Tales of Dunk and Egg novella that will appear in an anthology called Dangerous Women. We are very pleased as we are huge fans of Dunk and Egg.

There hasn’t been much news in terms of The Winds of Winter. GRRM changed the sample chapter that is available on his web site. You can use the link below. The Theon chapter has been replaced. The new novella from the Dunk and Egg world has been postponed, but Dangerous Women will contain some pre-Robert’s Rebellion history written by GRRM. I Read way to fast thru the other books thinking it was the End in A Dances with Dragons. Oh to be back in those days and times. I’m will be overjoyed when the next book comes out!
i know how you feel, i was inspired by the show to read the books and they are just so good i cant put them down.
Im trying a full read through of the series after i finished Im about to finish a clash of kings again and you get all kinds of stuff that you may have missed the first go round
is winds of winter on the way yet?
Very sorry to live up to my name and show my cynicism here… but when I look at pictures of GRRM, I see a super morbidly obese older gentleman who is quite incorrectly assuming that he actually HAS five more years to write another book, let alone multiple books. He looks fat, gray, out of shape…. I can almost hear the labored breathing of COPD. I am not counting on ANY more finished books before he kicks the can and leaves us all pissed and wanting more that will never ever arrive. Yall are fools to pin your hopes on one fat old man surviving to complete these books. Dead man walking.
Am quickly loosing enthusiasm for Winds of Winter. First, it’s too long between release dates and there are new books to capture my attention. Second, I am still not happy with his need to kill off the charactures I have become vested in time and time again. It would be shocking, but realistic to kill of a couple – but MOST of them? It’s hard to remain invested in a story line when you have to start all over with new charactures. So he may be loosing one fan and one sale here…. not that he will notice, but it is a sad thing for me. Nothing better than a fun series of novels on the long nights in Minnesota (where winter IS coming).
Read the other books, and when it comes out, it comes out. It is what it is.
your a idiot, honestly
I suppose writers have the right to kill his characters at will, but have to agree with dissappointedme. I’ve finished “A Dance With Dragons” (no spoilers here, so no names) and certain deaths, and particularly one, (guess many will agree with me) are very frustrating, and leave the impression that the author writes himself into a helpless situation and then kills the most important character of that plot to avoid having to solve its problems.
I quite like the books he has killed off alot of characters but it flows with his story. Ned stark was a sad one for me he has utilized the death of a major player for a major plot twist to keep you in your seat. with the magic of the red priests people may be revived …. I think a snowy wolf will come back from the dead and not with bright blue eyes
. he left book five with a lot of people hanging on for book six I just hope it is done soon. but i will patiently wait read otehr books and re read and absorbe the other five books. and watch the series which have beeb nfairly true. it is hard to take something from a personal perspective to a third person perspective i think the show has done a good job of it personally considering how badly other books have been butchered at the hands of hollywood
Yeah, it’s sad when characters I root for get killed off but it doesn’t make me love the books any less. It’s more realistic. People die and the good guys don’t always win. I think it’ll all come out in the wash and if it doesn’t, it’ll come out in the rinse!
This auther is ADD. He does in 50 directions and never finishes a thought. He needs a co writter Bad.
Because he doesn’t write for 16 year olds as in hunger games or twighlite? He doesn’t have add….cool as f***…..
@Casey- Actually, I’m 16 and am completely sucked into this series, were as I despise twilight with a passion and do not care much for the hunger games.
Great Job GRRM,
Just finished book 5 and I’m just really glad the lord snow has a red priestess near by. Also i think Wun wun is gonna kill some crows. Hes gonna be the one to protect snow from further harm.
Please just hurry up with winds of winter, i so wanna know what fool is gonna die next? its Jamie right???
I Started to read the series back in the 1990. It is time to end the series. I agree the new people sometimes get confusing, but i wont stop. Please at least let two stark’s remain. John, Bran and The younger sister. And of course – why let all our favourites die. THE FREYS MUST DIE DIE DIE, if the author leaves a single one alive – I will never read his books again and burn the entire set.
Please notify me of the release date of George r r Martin’s The winds of winter.I have read all of his other Game of thrones and find I am now addicted to the whole series on tv as well as Kindle reading. I admire this man’s dedication to his never ending hard work and brilliant mind
Hope he actually finishes the last book in the series.
Waiting for the book to come out so i can read. thanks for your efort in hurring up.
Characters that I liked a lot in the first and second books died. There were new and they are not as emblematic of as dead. Sometimes links get lost in “A Dance with Dragons” … I hope things fall into place in “Winds of Winter”
excellent series, i love that no one or nothing is sacred, anything can happen at any time, awesome
Is this website ever updated? It is now late March 2013 and yet this page still talks about the scheduled release of A Dance With Dragons in July 2012. Amazon is currently listing a release date of 10/29/2013 for the paperback.
I am ready to move on since the author seems more interested in re-writing (changes not for the better) the earlier books for the HBO series than in continuing the story for those who have loved the previous books. If it is going to be late 2014 before the next installment comes out, I just may not return to the series.
I’m addicted! Can’t wait.
Is the loss of a major character towards the end of Dance with Dragons really what has happened ? Remember another character that was seeming killed but returned. Mind movement, skin changing..Martin has left us in suspense again. If sufficient is written, there could be a book 7..Spring took a long time to come this year..what happens when fire meets ice ? Hope Martin has the courage to conclude with at least hope.
Please inform me when “Winds of Winter” will be released thank you
Let us all remember the famous words, paraphrased thusly, “You know nothing,Readers”. Until the next book is out, who can be sure of who is dead and who is not? That being said, I hope with all my heart it does not turn into a “Wheel of Time” situation.
When is the next book comming out?!? “Winds of Winter”
If we are lucky, summer of 2014. But he needs to have it done by the end of the year and it sounds like he can’t make that date. End of 2014 seems reasonable give or take a few months. Final book 2017. Hopefully he can live long enough to finish it. But if not Brandon Sanderson can finish it.
Please let me know when the book is coming out. I thought it was to be March…
I would like to know when book 6 The Winds of Winter is released.
Please let me know when book 6 The Winds of Winter will be released.
I would like to be notified when Winds of Winter is released.
As well as an idea on when book 7 will be completed.
