Update: June, 2014:
A site that we deeply respect, FiveThirtyEight has put out an interesting article explaining the various ways that one could try and predict the release date of The Winds of Winter.
Update: March, 2014:
Call this one a hunch. With The World of Ice and Fire scheduled to come out just before the holiday season this year, I’m feeling confident that The Winds of Winter will be released in October (maybe November), 2015. The stars just seem to be aligning right for this one. GRRM has been quiet, which means he is writing. Less promotional tours, less conferences, more writing. If he continues to spend his time in New Mexico, he could easily complete the book by year’s end and start the final editing and promotional process for a fall release.
The sixth book is going to be called The Winds of Winter, taking the title of the originally last book of the trilogy and the later planned fifth of six books. By June 2010, Martin had finished four chapters for The Winds of Winter, from the viewpoints of Sansa Stark, Arya Stark, and Arianne Martell. In July 2010, he added that an Aeron Greyjoy chapter had been moved from A Dance with Dragons to The Winds of Winter, accumulating to around 100 completed pages. We don’t believe that GRRM has done much “original” writing for The Winds of Winter yet, but that most of the existing chapters are from A Dance With Dragons, and have been moved to The Winds of Winter via the editing process.
After the publication of A Dance with Dragons, Martin announced his return to writing in January 2012, spending the meantime on book tours, conventions, and continuing his work on the long-overdue The World of Ice and Fire companion guide that he wanted to have finished by the end of 2011. He also worked on a new Tales of Dunk and Egg novella that will appear in an anthology called Dangerous Women. We are very pleased as we are huge fans of Dunk and Egg.

April 2013 UPDATE:
GRRM gives a short update in this video on the progress of The Winds of Winter.
There hasn’t been much news in terms of The Winds of Winter. GRRM changed the sample chapter that is available on his web site. You can use the link below. The Theon chapter has been replaced. The new novella from the Dunk and Egg world has been postponed, but Dangerous Women will contain some pre-Robert’s Rebellion history written by GRRM. The story will be called “The Princess and The Queen.” The anthology is not available for order yet. In the mean time, we recommend enjoying the HBO show if it is available do you.
